TOM CLEVERLEY’S Euro 2012 SOCKS?

The Manchester United midfielde hopes have suffered a major blow after he aggravated the ankle injury that has troubled him all season.

TOM CLEVERLEY has just returned from five months out and had been named in Stuart Pearce’s England squad for next week’s clash with Holland.

The news will raise concerns about whether he was rushed back too soon and leaves Cleverley’s hopes of making the England squad for this summer’s finals in Poland and the Ukraine hanging in the balance.

His loss is also a huge blow to United boss Sir Alex Ferguson as his side look to keep pace with Manchester City at the top of the table.

He will undergo more tests with United’s medical staff this weekend but is expected to be sidelined for several weeks.

He will miss United’s trip to Norwich tomorrow but is likely to report to the England HQ for them to make a final decision on his fitness.

Cleverley told Starsport earlier this month how desperate he was to have a strong finish to the campaign and force his way into the England squad for the Euros.

Fergie has tipped the 22-year-old for greatness but Cleverley has been cursed when it comes to making his England debut.

He was called up by Fabio Capello in August but the game with Holland at Wembley was cancelled due to the London riots.

He received another call-up for the Euro 2012 qualifying matches with Bulgaria and Wales the following month but did not end up being in the final squad.

He is now facing a race against time to get fit again and win back his place in the United line-up in the hope of being on the plane to Eastern Europe in June
.

But Fergie has been handed a boost with the news Antonio Valencia could return to action sooner than expected.
